Good singing isn’t only beautiful — it’s alchemical.

The great American composer Charles Ives once asked, "What does sound have to do with music?" I love pondering this question; but when I do, I can't help but think of another: If music isn't (just) sound, then what is it?

More and more, I feel that the answer is energy. As a musician, music is something you do. You train, practice, struggle, repeat. But the real magic happens when you transcend the mechanics and become a conduit, allowing the ineffable to take form and be translated into sound. And I don't know about you, but I just live for those moments.

So what if music was more a state of being than an activity? What if presence was more important than song? It means we can all be musicians! We can bring the transforming power of music into our day-to-day lives. And if more of us were musicians--literally or metaphorically--wouldn't that mean we could live in better harmony, more attuned to each other, while living in our highest resonance?

I'm not sure if this is what Ives was referring to, but I do know music--and singing in particular--is transforming. Singing and sharing music helps us connect, resonate, and belong. And this helps us not just find our voice, but discover where our own music comes from.

So sing, make some music, whether for yourself or others. It's not an easy path, but it is filled with beauty and goodness. Plus, it is a powerful way to access the divine, to bridge the visible and unseen, to restore our aliveness, and in doing so, become more of what we were always meant to be.

Many think that music starts with sound, but what if it starts before that, with the essence of life itself — breath? Breath becomes sound. Sound becomes feeling. Feeling becomes connection.
And then, magic happens: something invisible takes form and touches...
